2003-06-17 - Band Shirt

Rant show/hide

So I went to the Boston concert on Sunday, and I felt really cool for going to my first big concert ever (as everything else I've done that sorta adds up to that have been like seeing a band at some other sort of event,... like Of Montreal at that campus barbeque). I immediately felt a whole lot less cool as soon as I saw a sea of silver-haired old folks in front of me. Oh well, I still had a blast. Thought I was gonna say "I had a really good time" didn't you? Who do you think I'd have to be to make a pun like that... a Q-104 DJ? Seriously, since they're sponsoring the concert series, one of thier DJ's got to come out on stage and tell everyone to sit down because the concert was about to start soon. Seeing as how Boston hasn't toured since 1998, he felt he had to mention that "It's been such a long time" since they've been on stage. ::shudder::
Anyhow, like David Spade says (or was it Dana Carvey....?) there's that guy who wears the band shirt to the concert of the band on the shirt. Don't be that guy. It gets really pathetic looking after a while. It's like those guys you see every year at Otakon who wear their Otakon '94 t-shirts around just to prove to you that they're a better fan than you. Of course the standard reply would have to be "so you're proud that you came before it was worth coming to? You fucking loser!"
I've also reaffirmed my belief that there are a few Devils fans who need to be rounded up and dropped into the reactor at 3-mile island. And I don't mean the core... I mean just past the radiation barriers, that first level where you'd need a hazmat suit. I want them to die a slow painful radiation-sickness death. Being that I own exactly one hat, I wore my Rangers hat to the show. I got one security guard who was like "yeah, I'm a fan too. Sucks to live in New Jersey," some guy who just chanted "raaaaaannngeeerrrrrssss!" When I turned around and look at him he was chuckling and just said "sorry, I couldn't resist."
That's okay.... that's pretty comical stuff. But then I took my seat. Now, the hat itself if pretty inconspicuous... it's blue wool with "Rangers" written across the strap and the logo on the front (the old shield logo). There was a guy sitting a few rows behind me who decided to try to mock me for liking the Rangers. "Rangers suck! Devlis rock!" and other uncreative things. I think I did the right thing... that is don't turn around, pretend you can't hear him, and instead mock him with Jeff and Tryon.
Then he spent most of the concert yelling at the stage "Play Smokin'!!!!!!!" as though they could actually hear him and/or gave a damn what he wanted to hear. And of course, Boston did its little props-to-New-Jersey thing, as is standard concert fare. And as they're just prattling off a few things about how Jersey kicks ass (nothing that would specifically apply to Jersey, of course) this guy behind me is ranting "The Devils won the Stanley Cup!!!!"
I label that man a blight on humanity, and I'm sure that if I turned around, he would have been wearing the band shirt.
