2003-07-01 - Flame War

Rant show/hide

I had better not recieve any flames about these comments. They're meant as flamebait as part of the joke. And for those of you who don't know what Slashdot is, well it's one of the best sources of geek news there is (as it's mostly a collection of other stories from around the internet that actual geeks found interesting enough to share). They've never accepted one of my stories, but hey that's the way it goes (gripe gripe grumble grumble).
Well, this has actually become a new hobby of mine. I've been responding to stuff on slashdot with some regularity, but sometimes I just throw some flamebait in there to piss people off. It's funny to see some script kiddie try to defend Linux. I try to pick on people who don't know who they're talking about, prodding at them until they get angry enough to snap back, and usually they give you some truly bullshit response that makes no sense at all. It's like being on a Darwin Awards mailing list. Everyday, I get a new little tidbit of human stupidity to laugh at. Glorious schadenfreude.
I did read an interesting article recently about the "end of irony," and the ironic part about it is that the article cited a bunch of things considered ironic that weren't technically, but the author got it wrong on a few of them so they actually were ironic. Hard to get your brain around, I know. Not nearly as hard as this article though, where some british lady tried so desperately to defend what I can only imagine is one of her favorite words. The irony of the article is that she thinks (or the reader infers that she thinks) that the changing of "irony"'s meaning will cause the word to lose it's special meaning and therefore further errode the language. The reality is that redefining words is a natural process in the evolution of language and usally leads to strengthening it.The stated mistruth only makes the actual truth all that much more apparent, while being the opposite. Well, that's irony for you.
Well, it's getting a little late, so I'm gonna get goin'. I'll have a cute pic up soon in the projects section, and then another comic on Thursday, so be patient and I'll get you some stuff. Sorry I missed last Thursday's comic, btw. My schedule kinda fell apart (not my posting schedule, but my day-to-day schedule), so I couldn't find time to draw. I'm back on track now, though, so keep checking back with regularity.
And who knows, if you do, I could pull in some sponsors and maybe even make a few bucks off this thing... but I really really really doubt it.
